I adore travelling. The opportunity to travel is wonderful. It opens up a whole new world. It can show you a different side of yourself. It can influence the way you want to dress, by becoming inspired by your new surroundings. Placing yourself in a new environment can be challenging, and uncomfortable, however, this can be where new discovery is made.
For this week's journal, I spoke with Aimee Stringer who lives in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. Aimee recently resigned from her full-time teaching position and is constantly seeking new opportunities that align with her interests.
I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to travel to a variety of places overseas. I enjoy learning about a new culture, seeing the way people interact, and especially the clothing they wear on a day-to-day basis. I asked Aimee a few questions about becoming inspired whilst travelling, what influences her, and who her style aspirations are.
How does travelling inspire the way you dress?
“Being located in a coastal town, the local fashion scene is very relaxed and casual. In recent times I have travelled to bigger cities such as Sydney and Auckland and found those trips acted as a permission slip for me to be more playful in my wardrobe pairings! The vibrancy, diversity, and corporate nature of the city bring out a much more daring version of me - it is so refreshing to be in a space where nobody knows your name. Any fear of judgment leaves my body, and if I like it, I wear it!”
One of my favourite places I have travelled to was Paris, France. The buildings are beautiful, with small balconies, and decorative pillars, and of course you cannot forget the almond croissants! I become inspired when I travel. Being in Paris, made me notice everything around me more, and to take in my surroundings. I was appreciative of where I was in the world, yet I tend to forget this when back in my hometown. As Aimee mentioned, when visiting a new place, you tend to feel less judged, and more willing to express yourself through clothing. I love the way you can recreate yourself by stepping into different clothing when in new places. A sense of freedom, and a way to find what you truly love.
Which places would you love to live in one day and why?
“For the past couple of years, I have toyed with the idea of jumping abroad to Australia or moving to a bigger city in Aotearoa. I don’t have a specific destination in AU and/or NZ in mind, but my three non-negotiables are 1) has a great ocean/surf culture. 2) a vibrant CBD with plenty of diversity. 3) lots of sunshine hours and warm temps to soak up the Vit D!”
How would you describe your style? What are your influences and inspirations?
“My wardrobe tends to be very girly and feminine. I am a petite 5ft 3, so I prioritise fashion rules that elongate my figure! My style is Scandinavian-inspired, and influenced by the coast around me. I enjoy wearing light fabrics and soft shapes, contrasting classic and playful pieces and I often experiment with colour and pattern. I recently found out that a deep winter colour palette is the most complimentary of my features, pops of red and cobalt blue are becoming staples in my wardrobe! A personal challenge I am taking up in 2024 is to invest in more neutral pieces with interesting shapes and textures, styling classic pieces from Aimee Georgia have complimented this goal nicely!”
Who are your style inspirations?
“Princess Diana is both a fashion and life inspiration of mine. Growing up, my Mum always spoke of how influenced she was by Diana in the 90’s and I also fell in love with her iconic style, kind heart, and free spirit. In terms of fashion, Lady Di really showed us how to style classic clothing, contrast masculine and feminine shapes, and priortise styling accessories to pull together a polished look. I also am loving Scandinavian fashion at present and the pairing of crazy colours and prints with classic staples.”
As shown above, Aimee styled our Jasmin Top in White, and our Isla Maxi Skirt, with a pair of black flats, a cream slouchy handbag, and a red bow to tie the look together.
